Panama Residency FAQ

Straight‑to‑the‑point answers to the questions we hear every week. If you don’t find yours below, ping us in the AskPanama app or schedule a consult.

General Basics

1. How long can I stay in Panama as a tourist?

Most passport holders receive 90 days on arrival. Canadians & some Europeans often get 180 days, but this is discretionary. Overstays incur a $50/month fine and can jeopardize future entries.

  1. Friendly Nations Visa (FNV) – for citizens of 50+ countries; requires a Panamanian company or local employment + $200k real‑estate or CD investment.
  2. Pensionado – lifetime residency for retirees with a $1,000+/mo pension.
  3. Qualified Investor Visa (QI) – invest $300k+ in real estate, $500k in securities, or $750k bank deposit.
  4. Reforestation Investor – $100k+ in certified teak/forest projects.
  5. Short‑Stay Remote Worker – 9‑month digital nomad permit (renewable once).
  6. Marriage/Family Reunification – spouse or child of a Panamanian citizen.
See our Residency Options page for a side‑by‑side table.
  • Friendly Nations: Yes, once you have the work permit or own your company.
  • Pensionado: No formal work; passive income & dividends allowed.
  • Investor Visas: Yes, you can be a director/shareholder of your own company.
  • Friendly Nations: 4–6 months (temporary + permanent).
  • Pensionado: 3–4 months.
  • Qualified Investor: 30 days fast‑track after funds land.
Processing times depend on document readiness and immigration backlog.

Documents & Apostilles

5. Which documents need to be apostilled or legalized?
  • Police clearance (issued within 6 months).
  • Birth & marriage certificates (if applying with dependents).
  • Pension letters or investment certificates.
All foreign docs must be apostilled (Hague) or Panama‑consulate legalized.

Yes—any non‑Spanish document requires an official translation by a Panamanian court‑certified translator. AskPanama handles this locally.

Immigration demands originals with wet signatures. Couriers (DHL/FedEx) are fine, but keep tracking and send scans first so we can pre‑check.

Costs & Fees

8. What government fees should I expect?
  • Temporary card: $50.
  • Permanent card issuance: $100.
  • Multientry visa (if you’ll exit before approval): $50.
Additional fees apply for work permits, investor registrations, or reforestation audits.
  • Friendly Nations: $3,500–$5,000 (single applicant).
  • Pensionado: $2,000–$3,000.
  • Qualified Investor: $10,000+ (complex compliance).
AskPanama offers flat‑fee bundles—see Get Residency Assistance.

Not fixed, but immigration wants to see consistent income or corporate activity that supports your stay. We recommend evidence of $1,000+/mo.

During the Process

11. Do I have to stay in Panama while my application is pending?

No, but if you leave before getting your multientry visa ($50), you’ll pay a $2,000 penalty on re‑entry. We secure the multientry within 10 days.

Yes—most banks allow it with a tourist stamp plus AskPanama’s intro letter. Having the account actually speeds up residency approval.

A 6‑month photo ID issued after your file is submitted. It lets you live, open utilities, sign leases, and re‑enter Panama (with multientry stamp).

After Approval

14. Do I need a Cedula?

The E‑Cedula (national ID) is optional but highly recommended—it replaces carrying your passport and speeds up everything from SIM cards to bank queues. AskPanama arranges it post‑approval ($65 government fee).

  • Friendly Nations & Pensionado: Permanent from day one—no renewal, just keep address updated.
  • Qualified Investor: Conditional for 2 years, then permanent.
  • Remote Worker: 9–18 months max, non‑renewable to permanent.

After 5 years of permanent residency (3 years if married to a Panamanian). Dual citizenship is permitted for many nationalities; check your home country’s rules.

Dependents & Family

17. Can my spouse and kids be included?

Yes—dependents file simultaneously. Budget +$1,000–$1,500 legal fees per dependent, plus police/birth certs. Kids under 12 skip the police record.

No—one investment covers the family, but income requirements scale (e.g., Pensionado +$250 per dependent).

Panama recognizes de facto unions (minimum 5‑year cohabitation) but documentation is tricky. A legal marriage simplifies everything.

Special Cases

20. I have a criminal record—am I automatically disqualified?

Felonies within the last 5 years or crimes against minors are grounds for denial. Minor infractions (e.g., DUI) may pass with a legal brief. Consult us first.

Immigration only counts bank‑traceable fiat. Convert crypto to USD, then wire to a Panamanian bank or escrow account before filing.

Same‑sex marriage isn’t yet recognized, so couples apply separately or use investor visas. Advocacy is ongoing; we can advise on current work‑arounds.
